Kindergarten
Welcome to Kindergarten at Old Pointe Elementary School!
Kindergarten is a year where all sorts of learning and growth takes place. Students will have the opportunity to socialize with their peers and learn through purposeful play as well as develop many cognitive skills. Read more below about what we will learn throughout the year:
Reading: Students will begin learning the foundational skills of reading including decoding, encoding, story elements, and comprehension - all taught through stories read aloud and independent reading time with decodable texts and leveled readers.
Writing: Students will begin learning how to write using letters, words, and sentences. Students will write narrative stories, opinion pieces, and informational texts.
Math: Students will focus on beginning number sense including counting 20 objects, writing numerals to 20, counting out loud to 100, learning about basic shapes, and beginning addition and subtraction.
Science: Students will focus on four main units including five senses, forces and motion, light and shadow, and animals and plants.
Social Studies: Students will learn about rules and communities, maps, timelines, and wants and needs.
